A brief background of the Falcon tumbler…

A tumbler is said to relate to a cup that is reasonably short, wide and has no handle. It is rumoured to have historically been made of metal and have a round bottom. The name itself, ‘tumbler’, can be traced back to the 17th century and may relate to its small size. The history of the word itself varies but it looks to date back to the medieval period and is related to it being a cup that couldn’t be put down without it tumbling and spilling. Another line of thought is that ‘tumbler’ related to it being heavily weighted at the bottom to ensure it couldn’t be knocked over at all.

Nowadays, the modern-day tumbler is usually made of plastic, glass, enamel and more recently sustainable and biodegradable materials such as bamboo. Although there are many reuse initiatives with using a plastic tumbler for your morning tea or coffee run, there is little need to be purchasing a tumbler in plastic for events such as picnics or for children when there are so many other alternatives out there today.

Our enamel tumbler is made of glass fused onto heavy gauge steel and was originally manufactured in the Black Country area near Birmingham, England. In the 50’s the manufacturing was moved to the Far East – a progressive move for its time. To this day, our products are made in China and hand finished with love and care.In 2011, the original Falcon was revitalised – creating new colours for the tumbler and other collections, as well as introducing new cookware sets and increasing the gauge of the classic mug, making the products more durable and hard wearing. Nowadays the Falcon tumbler can not only withstand the freezer, dishwasher and oven, it also works on both a gas and electric hob.
Rae from Raepublic is a big fan of Falcon Enamelware, especially our tumbler selection. Find out why she loves the versatility of our tumbler and try her amazing recipes for adaptogenic superfood iced lattes just below.

"I love the Falcon Enamelware tumbler because it is gorgeous and timeless. It is also essentially indestructible, if you accidentally drop a tumbler, it just adds character to the piece.

I love the tumbler in particular because it is perfect for some many things, obviously drinking out of it is common but baking in it is a dream too.

Also, the tumbler is great for when friends are visiting, you can give each person a different color so no one ever mixes up their drinks."
